Jio Platforms launched on India’s stock exchange with the country’s largest initial public offering, securing over $3 billion in capital. Its shares debuted at 1,358 rupees—a 21% premium over the 1,119-rupee issue price—while demand exceeded supply by 22 times, according to listing documents. The offering belonged to Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, which has led Jio’s dominance in India’s telecom sector since its 2014 launch. The company’s aggressive pricing strategy drew customers from rivals like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone, accumulating over 530 million subscribers. While telecom services still drive most revenue, Jio has since expanded into digital platforms, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, aiming to become a central player in India’s technology sector.

At the listing ceremony in Mumbai, Akash Ambani, Jio’s managing director and Mukesh Ambani’s eldest son, outlined the company’s future direction. “In our first 10 years, we democratised data… In our next 10, we want to democratise every technology that can transform Indian lives,” he stated. “AI, cloud, connected devices, connectivity even from space and digital services not yet imagined.” His remarks highlighted Jio’s intention to shift beyond telecom and establish itself as a full technology platform.

Shifting from growth to profit focus

Financial analysts at Nomura described the move as a strategic pivot from rapid subscriber growth to maximizing revenue per user. “We believe the heavy 5G investment cycle is largely behind for Jio… freeing up significant cash flow,” the firm explained in a research note. The IPO timing suggests a focus on leveraging existing infrastructure rather than further expansion.

Jio’s ambitions include developing a low-orbit satellite network to deliver broadband from space, creating direct competition with Elon Musk’s Starlink. Musk has accused unnamed Indian business leaders of obstructing Starlink’s market entry, but Reliance denied any interference, stating it welcomes competition in satellite communications.

Asia’s tech surge overshadows India’s gains

The listing coincided with broader tech sector movements across Asia. South Korea’s SK Hynix reported a 632% increase in third-quarter operating profit to $62.8 billion, driven by AI chip demand. The company’s performance contributed to a 6.6% rise in the Kospi index, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed 1.1% as semiconductor and electronics firms led gains. In contrast, India’s Sensex experienced a slight decline despite Jio’s record IPO, reflecting uncertainty ahead of earnings reports from Microsoft and Alphabet. The Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision also influenced markets, with traders assessing potential December rate adjustments based on inflation and labor data.

Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 closed at 63,954.19, up 1.1%, with semiconductor stocks leading gains. Kioxia, a memory chip manufacturer, surged 13.8% due to AI hardware demand, while Advantest and Tokyo Electron also rose amid expectations of increased tech sector spending. South Korea’s Kospi index reached 6,012.44, a 6.6% gain fueled by SK Hynix’s record profits, though concerns about global tech valuations tempered the rally. Mumbai’s Sensex finished slightly lower despite Jio’s successful listing, as investors remained cautious ahead of earnings from major tech firms.

Brent crude settled at $116.22 per barrel, up 2.1%, as geopolitical risks outweighed expectations of slower Chinese demand. The U.S. dollar weakened against the yen, trading at 157.82, following Fed signals that further rate hikes may be near an end. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.2%, while Shanghai’s Composite climbed 0.9%, though Manila and Bangkok faced pressure from domestic economic slowdowns. The day’s market movements revealed diverging regional trends, with technology-driven economies outperforming those tied to commodity prices amid shifting global monetary policies.

AI hardware demand fuels chipmaker rallies

Technology stocks in Asia advanced Wednesday after SK Hynix reported strong earnings, reinforcing investor confidence in the artificial intelligence sector. The company’s financial results highlighted robust demand for AI-related hardware, which analysts said validated ongoing capital expenditures in the industry. This followed Anthropic’s disclosure of a 1,300% revenue increase in its first half, alongside plans for significant infrastructure spending to support AI development.

Broadcom, in partnership with Citi, Blackstone, and Morgan Stanley, announced a $63 billion financing structure to build new capacity for Anthropic. The move showed sustained investment in AI infrastructure, with market participants noting improved cost efficiency in computing resources. SK Hynix’s share price jumped nearly 11%, while South Korea’s Kospi index rose over 6%, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed more than 1% as chipmakers led gains. Taiwan’s TSMC also drove regional markets higher, though some Asian exchanges, including Sydney and Manila, saw modest declines.

Meanwhile, oil prices advanced over 2% as Israel’s election results fueled uncertainty about regional stability. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to step aside and his statements on potential U.S. cooperation with Donald Trump on Iran policy contributed to volatility. Opposition candidate Gadi Eisenkot’s claim of a mandate for change added to political uncertainty, though no immediate policy shifts were confirmed. Traders monitored the situation closely, as election outcomes could influence Middle East energy markets and global crude supplies.
