Commerce Department’s Commercial Specialist Banksharon Nwaneri Connects Businesses Globally
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s international trade professionals often rise through diverse career paths, but few embody the intersection of policy, finance, and global strategy quite like Banksharon Nwaneri. A Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) and Fellow of the Institute of Export & International Trade (FIBP), Nwaneri was awarded his elite designation in June 2025, a recognition that formalizes his extensive experience in cross-border commerce. His work centers on connecting businesses with opportunities that transcend traditional market boundaries, a mission he describes as unlocking potential despite inherent barriers.
Career Foundation in Banking and Development Finance
Prior to his role at the U.S. Embassy, Nwaneri built a decade-long foundation in commercial banking and development finance. He managed the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) portfolio, overseeing $500 million in liability products and $200 million in risk assets. His performance consistently exceeded quarterly and annual sales targets, a reflection of his ability to build client relationships and manage complex financial instruments. “Each achievement felt deeply fulfilling precisely because it was earned through high performance under pressure,” he noted.
This banking background provided Nwaneri with a deep understanding of financial infrastructure, which later informed his approach to international trade. He views the MSME sector’s challenges—access to capital, market entry, and regulatory compliance—as parallels to the obstacles faced by small-to-medium enterprises seeking global expansion. His experience in meeting aggressive targets while maintaining client trust became a blueprint for his later work in trade facilitation.
Strategic Leadership at the British Council
Nwaneri then transitioned to the British Council, where he spearheaded strategic partnerships to expand the organization’s global footprint. One of his most notable achievements was leading a B2B initiative for the IELTS Program, designed to counter declining competitive position. He developed the entire program, from conceptualizing offers to structuring incentives for partners like test centers and universities. The initiative resulted in a measurable increase in market share, validating his approach to partnership-driven growth.
“It was satisfying to take a project from abstract idea to measurable success,” Nwaneri said. “Seeing the market respond so positively validated the importance of a strategy rooted in partnership and insight.” His work at the British Council demonstrated how tailored programs could reverse competitive challenges, a skill set that now informs his role at the Commerce Department.
Advancing Inclusive Economic Growth
As a Commercial Specialist, Nwaneri helps U.S. companies enter new markets, secure international bids, and manage trade barriers. He emphasizes inclusive economic growth, particularly in emerging markets, where partnerships can create mutual benefits for local and U.S. stakeholders. “I’m passionate about advancing inclusive economic growth in emerging markets and forging relationships that create real impact for both U.S. and local stakeholders,” he explained.
By maintaining a network of commercial contacts across key sectors and countries, he identifies opportunities that align with U.S. trade objectives while addressing local needs.
The Value of Certification in Global Trade
Earning the CITP designation was a deliberate step for Nwaneri, who sought to formalize his practical knowledge with a globally recognized credential. “What appealed most to me was how it validates not just knowledge, but also the ability to apply complex trade principles, from regulatory compliance to financial logistics, not just in theory, but on real-world projects,” he said. The certification, he argues, signals expertise and integrity in a field where credibility is critical.
